CANCELED Info-Event at New Yorck in Bethanien. Evictions in Calais: what happened and where can we find those responsible

Sorry! EVENT IS CANCELLED, due to unforeseen circumstances. Please send us an email to be informed of the new date cms.berlin@riseup.net

Join us on Monday, Dec. 12 @ 19h in New Yorck in Bethanien, Mariannenplatz 2a – 10997 Berlin U Kottbusser Tor

The state and their police hordes descended on Calais in heavy numbers this October to evict the jungle which used to house thousands of peopleeurotunnel-drone
on their way to the UK. Police have cleared and demolished the jungle and are arresting any person without documents remaining in the city.
While their brutality is a day-to-day affair in Calais (and elsewhere), this October signalled a clear increase in state repression. Besides the state, there is wide-spread corporate involvement in Europe’s repressive migration policies. Also in Calais, security companies have a flourishing industry from privatization of border control inspections to the manufacturing of tear gas & drones; from detention & detainee transport contractors to constantly increasing fences & walls along the highway. Join this info-evening for updates on the recent situation in Calais as well as an exploration of the border regime in Calais and its collaborators.

[ This event will be in English but translation in German can be provided if needed (possibly in other languages too – if you need translation in other languages shoot us an email before at cms.berlin@riseup.net so we can try to arrange it]

Welcome to Calais : An Info-Guide

A group of us in Berlin spent a lot of the past year creating this info-guide and translating it into 5 languages. The book provides specific information to people who find themselves in Calais at the French-British border and information for migrants and refugees who wish to live and travel within Europe.

You can check it out here:
Welcome to Calais

Since the booklet was created in Summer 2015, obviously a number of things will be already out of date due to the currently rapidly changing asylum system. Please let us know if you notice anything that should be changed! welcome2calais@riseup.net

Aufenthaltsstatus

Nov. 12th Info-Evening + Nov. 16th Calais Preparation Workshop

We are organizing an info-evening on Nov. 12th! If you are interested in going to Calais for the first time, we will also offer a preparation workshop on Sunday, Nov. 16th to familiarize people with the work of CMS and what they should practically expect when arriving in Calais for the first time.

Note: Those interested in attending the workshop should also attend the info-evening, so that they have an overview of the situation on the ground. On Sunday we’ll try to dive right into practicalities and won’t spend a lot of time explaining background information!

Nov. 12th @ Subversiv, 20h – Soli-Evening

Küfa: Soli vegan wraps from munch_mob

We’ll talk about recent developments in Calais, including the huge increases in the numbers of those stuck there over the past months, recent occupations, the rise of widespread fascism, new funding from the UK to increase violence at the border, and the ongoing escalation of the situation there.

* The language of the event will be German. We can offer translation into English if needed.

If you have donations for Calais, please bring them, we will have a collection box there! Thanks!

Nov 16th, 12h (Location TBA) – Calais Preparation Workshop

Please Register: cms.berlin@riseup.net

We will email those who have registered with the workshop location.

This is a 6 hour training and will take up the entire afternoon! Schedule can be seen here (ENGLISH) or here (German)

Why are we doing this training?

The organizers have all spent time in Calais together and have reflected that it is important to improve the network beyond Calais. One problem we’ve noticed with incorporating new people into CMS is that often activists feel lost upon arriving for the first time: they aren’t sure what to do and don’t get enough support from long-term activists. As a result they end up having bad experiences and don’t return again. We want to be more welcoming but for those of us engaged on the longer term in Calais, it’s often very stressful to spend a long time introducing arriving new people when our everyday tasks are already fairly overwhelming. That’s why we think it’s important to help prepare people already before they leave. In the less stressful setting of Berlin we can take time to make sure new activists feel safe and prepared in terms of thinking about the types of tasks they hope to do in Calais. Obviously, it’s not a complete preparation, but we hope hearing about our personal experiences might help people thinking of going there for the first time!

DEUTSCH

* Language of the event will be English and/or German depending on the needs of participants.
